Before You Buy a Dog

Before you decide on a canine companion, you need to know a few things and what awaits you with a dog by your side. The most important thing is that a dog will give you unconditional love. Once we realise that a lovely fluffy dog or a large beautiful dog already belongs to us, we can start to see the downsides of having a four-legged friend at home. Are you ready for this, because I've already been through it? :))

Remember that:

  • A dog will toilet inside for some time until you teach it that the yard is the place to do its business
  • It drools, although this doesn't apply to all breeds
  • It gets dirty, running straight into the living room from a muddy walk
  • It sheds a lot of fur at least twice a year, which floats in the air and is practically everywhere, even in the fridge :)
  • It chews everything within reach of its mouth, especially when it's teething
  • It destroys the flat or house, for example by jumping at the front or patio doors, curiously tries to pull foam from armchairs, chews walls and skirting boards
  • It barks at night or howls during the day
  • It eagerly eats droppings from other animals and pulls on the lead during walks
  • When you call it, it runs away, and when you start chasing it, it runs even faster
  • It gets into bed
  • It jumps on guests

You could go on like this endlessly :))) If all of this doesn't scare you and you're ready to face it and bring up a fluffy bundle into a well-balanced dog…

...then answer yourself a few more of the following questions:

  • Do all household members want a dog in the home?
  • Does anyone in the household have an allergy to dog fur or saliva?
  • Are there other animals in the home?
  • Do you have enough time to dedicate to walks, training, play and grooming?
  • What will you do with the dog if something changes in your current life, for example going abroad, starting or expanding your family, etc.?
  • Will you be willing to go for a walk with your dog during frosts, heatwaves, downpours?
  • What will you do with the dog during your holiday? Will you be able to afford to take the dog with you, or would you prefer to leave it in a kennels?

Remember that by deciding to get a dog, you are taking responsibility for it.
