The Alaskan Malamute is an extraordinarily impressive dog breed that is characterised by exceptional endurance and strength. Few people are aware of the fact that dogs of this breed are the oldest representatives of the Arctic type, which served people as assistance in matters requiring the use of great strength, such as pulling sledges, as well as carrying loads. The Alaskan Malamute is a natural breed, which means that it was not created by humans, but developed through evolution, which is why we can easily state that amongst representatives of this breed there are fewer genetic diseases. The Alaskan Malamute is classified as a primitive breed. It is worth mentioning that the breed's name was reconstructed from the notes of the first North American settlers and originates from the Malamut tribe that lived in western Alaska.

Alaskan Malamute as your friend

To the surprise of many people, the Alaskan Malamute is typically an extremely friendly and likeable dog. Dogs of this breed are incredibly affectionate and also sociable. Thanks to good socialisation, they cope excellently in stressful situations, which is why they do not display aggression or behave unpredictably. It is worth noting, however, that these are merely characteristic traits amongst many representatives of this breed; nevertheless, we may also encounter situations where your Alaskan Malamute will be the complete opposite of a typical representative. Like every animal, the Alaskan Malamute needs plenty of exercise and for this reason, it will work perfectly in an active family.  A happy and well-trained Alaskan Malamute is the best friend for both adults and children, thanks to its dignified manner and calm temperament. It is commonly believed that the Alaskan Malamute is a guard dog. Nothing could be further from the truth! This breed was created to serve as an assistant to hunters and fishermen, and also to pull heavy loads at a slow pace, which is why it is not suited to sprint running. Dogs of this breed love to lounge about at home, cuddle up to their owners, and above all…. they love all kinds of activity.

Representatives of this breed are characterised by thick and very dense coat, which is often compared to wool. The colouring of dogs typically occurs in shades from light grey to black with white markings, and furthermore we can also encounter solid-coloured dogs, that is, entirely white. We can also see these dogs in seal colouring, which means that their coat is black or almost black, however a lighter undercoat shows through up close. In all colourings, with the exception of white, white dominates on the underside of the body, on the limbs, breeches and underside of the tail. An amazing fact amongst Alaskan Malamutes is that the colour of their nose is the same as the shade of their coat. The only exception is red colouring, in which the nose colour is usually brown.

Temperature and the wellbeing of the Alaskan Malamute breed

Representatives of this breed, thanks to their thick coat, thrive perfectly in sub-zero temperatures. Extreme cold and snow do not bother them. It is somewhat different with summer weather, when temperatures reach high levels. Some argue that walks with the dog should be avoided in such conditions; however, nothing could be further from the truth! The Alaskan Malamute is resistant to both heat and cold, but despite this does not like very sunny days. During this period, you should above all ensure that the dog has continuous access to fresh water. Furthermore, it is worth investing in a cooling mat, which will be the perfect relief for the dog.
